Pure by Jennifer Armentrout

Pure (Covenant, #2)Title: Pure[Covenant #2]
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Pages: 329
Rating: 5 out of 5
From Goodreads:
There is need. And then there is Fate
Being destined to become some kind of supernatural electrical outlet isn't exactly awesome--especially when Alexandria's "other half" is everywhere she goes. Seth's in her training room, outside her classes, and keeps showing up in her bedroom--so not cool. Their connection does have some benefits, like staving off her nightmares of the tragic showdown with her mother, but it has no effect on what Alex feels for the forbidden, pure-blooded Aiden. Or what he will do--and sacrifice--for her.

When daimons infiltrate the Covenants and attack students, the gods send furies--lesser gods determined to eradicate any threat to the Covenants and to the gods, and that includes the Apollyon and Alex. And if that and hordes of aether-sucking monsters didn't blow bad enough, a mysterious threat seems willing to do anything to neutralize Seth, even if that means forcing Alex into servitude or killing her.
When the gods are involved, some decisions can never, ever be undone.
------------------------------------------

I feel like I could write a poem about how much I love Jennifer Armentrout. I really liked Half-Blood, but Pure definitely stepped it up.

I have a weird way of looking at male characters in books. In HB I liked Aiden, but I didn't get completely taken by him, I was a little more interested in Seth. In Pure I[almost] got my fill of Seth and I feel completely head over heels with him. Even though I'm all Team Seth, I still want Alex & Aiden to end up together because it's what she wants. I want Seth for myself. This happens to me a lot in books, I think I have a thing for the underdog.

Alex is a badass that can whoop some major daimon ass, but she's still makes a lot of stupid mistakes. She tends to be a little bit self-absorbed at times, which isn't a trait I really like in a character. Then there were times where she redeemed herself by standing up for her friends and the half-bloods she thinks are being treated unfairly. I like Alex, but I can't say that I love her.

Aiden was being very Aiden-like. He spent the entire book acting like he didn't want to be with Alex, even though it's obvious to everyone[except Alex] that he does.

Seth. Oh Seth. He's funny, sexy, and slightly douchey. Okay, maybe he's a little more than slightly douchey, but I can't help myself. I love those moments of vulnerability that peaks through with him. He made the book for me. I missed him in every part of the story he wasn't in. I know there's something about him that hasn't been revealed yet, I can feel a little bit of deceit in him.

The action was great. I love the way JLA writes her fighting scenes. There were a lot of heated moments that had me breathing a little heavy. There was one pool scene in particular that had me yelling "Just kiss him dammit!". And then there were a few heartbreaking moments. I nearly cried when Alex gets a glimpse of what her future with Aiden might hold.

I think that the more we find out about the whole Apollyon thing the better the story will get. I find the connection that's growing between Seth & Alex very interesting.

Overall I felt like this was a very solid follow up to Half-Blood and I can't wait to get Deity.

The first in the series:
Half-Blood

The second:
Pure

Deity will be released on November 6th.

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer - Michelle Hodkin

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer - Michelle Hodkin
♥♥♥♥  ½

This book was phenomenal. I can't fathom the fact that I've had it for so long, and hadn't read it yet! I decided that in honor of the release of The Evolution of Mara Dyer, that I would read this in anticipation. My best friend and blogmate Kait kept telling me forever to read this book. If there's one thing I've learned... She never lets me down. Let me tell you, Michelle Hodkin didn't let me down either!

Mara Dyer is from Rhode Island.( Hey I live in RI!) She has a horrific accident in an asylum where she loses her best friend, her boyfriend and her friend. Mara is the only survivor. Dealing with this, she asks her family to move away.. for a fresh start. They end up moving to Florida. She enrolls at Croyden school, and meets the infamous, alluring Noah Shaw. Oh Noah, how I wish you were real. Noah is definitely in my top 5 book boyfriends of all time. Against what everyone tells her about Noah, Mara is drawn to him. Then again.. who isn't!? As Noah and Mara discover their feelings for each other, they also discover something else...

I can't wait to get my hands on Evolution. Finding out the curveball that you kept thinking about is real?! Shoot. I can't even deal with this. The unbecoming of Mara dyer is thrilling, and overwhelmingly emotional. Once you start reading this... you just won't put it down.

Michelle Hodkin You're brilliant. I have gone total fan girl for your work.

Lacrimosa by Christine Fonseca

Lacrimosa (Requiem, #1)Title: Lacrimosa
Author: Christine Fonseca
Pages: 344
Rating: 5 out of 5
From Goodreads:
It's been three thousand years since the fall of Azzaziel and the rebirth of evil; three thousand years since the Sentinal Order, an elite group of warrior angels, returned to Celestium. Their job-rid Earth of the dark creatures, the UnHoly. And with luck, end Azza's rule. As if casting out demons isn't hard enough, five-hundred-year-old Nesy has to masquerade as a teenage girl to do it. Nesy is the best of the Sentinals. She never makes mistakes, never hesitates, never gets emotionally involved. Until she meets Aydan. He is evil incarnate; a fallen angel that feeds off the souls of others. Everything Nesy is supposed to hate. But she can't, because he's also the love of her former life as a human girl-a life that ended too soon, tying her to emotions she was never supposed to feel. Now Nesy must choose between doing her duty-damning Aydan to the fiery depths of hell-or saving him, and condemning herself. And her choice may cost her, and Celestium, far more than anyone realizes. How much will she sacrifice for love?

-----

Christine Fonseca has a way with words. I learned that when I read Transcend [click the link to check this book out!]. So I wasn't surprised that I loved every poetic moment of Lacrimosa. I haven't been interested in reading angel and demon books for a while because they all seem to be the same. This book is definitely not like the others. There is something so different and fresh about this story.

I was instantly in love with the story and completely invested in the characters. Nesy and Aydan were a tangled mess of all consuming love and hate. Every painful conflict that Nesy felt, I felt. Every time Nesy and Aydan gave in to their feelings, my heart soared. The relationship was a beautiful battle and I couldn't help but to hope that love would conquer the duty that both Nesy and Aydan felt the need to carry out.

I quite liked the secondary characters as well. I'm glad I read Dies Irae before so I had a much better understanding of Mikayel and Azza. I especially liked Cass and I hope to get to know her better in future books.

I was beyond heartbroken at the end, but was very happy for the small bit of hope I was offered. I can't wait to dive into the second book and become lost in this world once again.

You should do yourself a favor and follow the link HERE and buy a book that is very worth your time.

Also, the prequel, Dies Irae, is FREE HERE!

Signed Copies of Slammed & Point of Retreat Giveway!

Everyone who knows me knows how much I rant and rave about my favorite books. The books that I have been raving about for months are Slammed & Point of Retreat by Colleen Hoover.

I'll even let you read my reviews.

Slammed (Slammed, #1)Slammed [this was before the blog]

Point of Retreat (Slammed, #2)Point of Retreat

So when I read Colleen's blog post a couple days ago I fangirled all over the place. Seriously, I did. Here's the big news:  Both books have been optioned to be made into films!
The big news on Colleen's blog!

What does this mean?Basically, when a book is optioned it means that someone paid for the rights to possibly turn these books into films. It's a time limited contract, meaning if the producer decides not to move forward with the film process the rights go back to the author and a new contract would have to be made.

I have serious high hopes for these books, and would love to see them on the big screen. I even have my own dream cast in mind, but I'll keep that in the bag for a later post.

Some other, also awesome news!
Since the books have been optioned there's a HUGE sale on them!
Only $3.99! These are such a steal.

Slammed
Point of Retreat

If you haven't read these books yet, you are missing out.

Okay, so here's the part that you're waiting for.
The butterflyingly amazing Colleen Hoover has offered to give away signed copies of BOTH Slammed and Point of Retreat right here on this blog! This is an international giveaway, so anyone can enter! Have I mentioned how much I love this woman!? As an aspiring writer I seriously look up her.

Resistance Character Quest: Gabe [day 7]

As all our fun comes to a bittersweet end, *pouts* I'd like to give a big THANK YOU to Author Stephanie Judice for this amazing blog tour! I hope everyone has had as much fun with this as we have. I feel like I know the characters personally now. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoyed the event

-Beth

We have come to our 7th and final day of the Resistance Character Quest. For our final day, we are welcoming Gabe to the blog!

Gabe's Bio: Vanquisher in Homer’s clan, Gabe is a compassionate, giving leader, but sometimes brooding and introspective. While leadership is a natural role for him, he sometimes longs to be the one who is taken care of.

Welcome, Gabe. Glad to have you here to SUBDUE our snooping minds! Let's get down to the nitty gritty of it all...

What’s your favorite book?

1984 by George Orwell. My favorite short story is “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut. Funny, I was always drawn to dystopian stories in high school, and now look where I’m at.

What worries you most these days?

Never getting rid of the reapers, never getting back to normal, never getting back home. But mostly, losing those I care about.

What do you like most about Clara? Least?

What I like most? Her smile, her honesty, her eyes. The way she bites her lip when she’s thinking about something.
Least? When she closes herself off to me. I can’t help her when she pushes me away. Sometimes, I wish I was a Tracer like Homer so I could just talk to her directly mind-to-mind. I wonder if she could block me out then. Hmmm…that’s something I’ll have to ask Homer.

In your Setti clan, who is the most difficult to live with and why?

Well, no one is really difficult, but Ben snores really loud sometimes. Honestly, I’m probably the most difficult because I tend to always think I’m right about things. (Of course, that’s because I usually am.)

What’s a quote that would represent your life right now?

“Faithless is he who says farewell when the road darkens.” J.R.R. Tolkien

Resistance Character Quest: Sonya [day 6]

Welcome to day #6 of the Resistance Character Quest. We hope you are all finding our bios and questions interesting and enlightening. Today we are privileged to welcome Sonya to the blog.

Sonya's Bio: Vanquisher for Herrald’s clan. There is no one who will tell you like it is the way Sonya will—whether you like it or not. She’s strong-willed almost to a fault. Jeremy’s nickname for her is “she-cat.” And she totally deserves it.

It's so great to have you with us here today, Sonya! We're glad you stopped by to QUELL our inquisitive minds! On with our interview...

 What is your favorite movie?
Kill Bill by Quentin Tarantino. Uma Thurman kicks ass in that movie. So cool.

What is a special childhood memory?
Well, I certainly don’t divulge this kind of information often, but I’ll be honest with you. My favorite childhood memory was Christmas when I was 9 years old. My dad was on tour in Afghanistan, and I knew he wouldn’t be home in time. Still, I also knew that he would send me something special. That morning, it was just Mom, Grandpaw and me. I kept opening presents, every time hoping it was the special one from Dad. After opening everything under the tree, Mom finally gave me a small, red-wrapped package the size of a jewelry box.

The way my mom smiled with tears in her eyes, I knew this was the one. But what could it be? The box was so light. My dad knew I didn’t care for jewelry, not really. I’ve always been a bit of a tomboy. Very excited, I unwrapped it and opened the box gently. Inside, there was a small, square sheet of paper. In my dad’s handwriting, it said, “I love you, Buttercup.  Look outside.”

I ran to the window and pushed opened the curtains. There in the middle of the front yard was my dad, beaming from ear to ear with a giant red ribbon wrapped around him. Needless to say, it was a happy reunion—the best Christmas ever.

(If you tell any of the others my nickname was ‘Buttercup,’ I might have to kill you.)

In your clan, who is the easiest to get along with?
That’s easy. Hannah. Sometimes I think she should’ve been a Healer. She’s got that serene, giving spirit, like an angel or something. Sooooooo not like me. Nice to have her around though.

Do you like to sing and dance?
Sing? Uh, no. Never. But I like to dance, or at least I used to. My best friend Jenny and I used to hang out at the top of the bleachers with the band during football games and dance right alongside them. That was so much fun. Wow. I haven’t thought about that in a long time. Feels like years ago, not months.

What’s a quote that would represent your philosophy on life?
“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.” By Dr. Seuss. I’ve always been one to do and say what I mean and what I feel. Sometimes, I piss people off, but whatever. Like the quote says, those people don’t matter. I am who I am. No apologies.

Thanks so much for stopping by and letting us into your world a bit, Sonya, it was great having you here!

Such A Rush by Jennifer Echols

Such a RushTitle: Such A Rush
Author: Jennifer Echols
Pages: 336
Rating: 5 out of 5
From Goodreads:
A sexy and poignant romantic tale of a young daredevil pilot caught between two brothers.

When I was fourteen, I made a decision. If I was doomed to live in a trailer park next to an airport, I could complain about the smell of the jet fuel like my mom, I could drink myself to death over the noise like everybody else, or I could learn to fly.

Heaven Beach, South Carolina, is anything but, if you live at the low-rent end of town. All her life, Leah Jones has been the grown-up in her family, while her mother moves from boyfriend to boyfriend, letting any available money slip out of her hands. At school, they may diss Leah as trash, but she’s the one who negotiates with the landlord when the rent’s not paid. At fourteen, she’s the one who gets a job at the nearby airstrip.

But there’s one way Leah can escape reality. Saving every penny she can, she begs quiet Mr. Hall, who runs an aerial banner-advertising business at the airstrip and also offers flight lessons, to take her up just once. Leaving the trailer park far beneath her and swooping out over the sea is a rush greater than anything she’s ever experienced, and when Mr. Hall offers to give her cut-rate flight lessons, she feels ready to touch the sky.

By the time she’s a high school senior, Leah has become a good enough pilot that Mr. Hall offers her a job flying a banner plane. It seems like a dream come true . . . but turns out to be just as fleeting as any dream. Mr. Hall dies suddenly, leaving everything he owned in the hands of his teenage sons: golden boy Alec and adrenaline junkie Grayson. And they’re determined to keep the banner planes flying.

Though Leah has crushed on Grayson for years, she’s leery of getting involved in what now seems like a doomed business—until Grayson betrays her by digging up her most damning secret. Holding it over her head, he forces her to fly for secret reasons of his own, reasons involving Alec. Now Leah finds herself drawn into a battle between brothers—and the consequences could be deadly.

-----------------

Wow. I fell completely head over heels with this book and all the characters. There were times I wanted to scream and there were times I actually did scream. I cried. I laughed. I fangirled a little too much.

"Love isn’t something you have to deserve.”

Leah has never felt love, except the love she has for flying. She's spent three and a half years working at the airport behind the trailer park she live in with her deadbeat mom. During this time she befriends the owner of the airport and begins flying for him. When he dies suddenly and his twin sons come to take over the business it sets off a downward spiral that Leah might not be able to pull herself out of.

Leah was amazing. I really appreciated her character progression. She felt trapped by what everyone else thought of her. Her passion for flying was great, I could really feel the excitement she was experiencing when she was flying. There were times I wanted her to snap and really stand up for herself, especially to the people around her. When everything finally came to a head I was very happy with where Leah stood.

Grayson was sex on a stick. He's exactly the type of book boy I fall for: brooding, semi-douchey, sarcastic, with an underlying sensitive streak.

Alec was sweet and nice, but I didn't connect with him as much as I did with his twin. I'm thinking that is kind of what the author was going for with the twins though.

Molly is the kind of girl you want to be friends with, even if she is a little bit clueless. I was really happy with the direction her friendship with Leah went.

Overall I felt very connected with the story. Jennifer Echols managed to hook me in the first few pages and I couldn't stop reading. She was very realistic with her use of language for the ages of the characters. It was refreshing to read about tough situations in a realistic way. I am definitely planning on reading more by this author.

Resistance Character Quest: Micheal [day5]

Today we're moving on the day #5 of the Resistance Character Quest. We're gonna be having a little chat with Michael today!

Michael's Bio:  Guardian for Herrald’s clan, there is one word that describes Michael—confident. Some might say he’s cocky, but he doesn’t think so. A motto he lives by? “Know what you want in life then go for it.”

It's so great to have you stop by here today, Michael. We want to welcome you and hope you can break the BUBBLE of curiosity we hold about you! On with our questions!

What’s your favorite book?

Well, I’m not a big reader, but our English teacher once made us read Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. That story has always stuck with me. Jean Valjean was a good guy, but was corrupted by a cruel world, becoming sort of heartless after a 19-year stint in prison for stealing a loaf of bread. When he finally leaves prison, one man teaches him that anyone can change from bad to good, from darkness to light. Valjean ends up doing just that. I love this kind of story. I have to believe that there is redemption for anyone, no matter what dark path they are on.

What do you miss most about high school?

I miss football the most—the guys, my coaches, my best friend, Daniel. There was something about being on that field with my offensive line, calling out plays in the huddle, hearing the crowds in the stands and the coaches calling from the sidelines that made sense to me. Everything was simpler, easier to figure out. Now, the world’s upside-down and we don’t know what’ll happen from one day to the next.

What’s a quote that would represent your life right now?

I remember this guy reciting a monologue from Henry V on Speech Night the very week before the Reapers came. His words are constantly in my head. Well, I guess they’re actually Shakespeare’s words. He said, “From this day to the ending of the world, we in it shall be remembered. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; for he today that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother.”

Yeah, that’s how I feel these days, but it goes for the girls, too. I feel tied to the Setti. We’re in this together till the end.

What is a special childhood memory?

Daniel has been my best friend since 1st grade. Even then he was a big kid. He’s always been the big kid. He’s also always been the nice guy. Well, Daniel and I lived about a block apart. When we were in 5th grade, I remember there was this middle-school bully that lived in a house between ours. What was his name, Gary or Jerry, something like that.

One day, I was waiting for Daniel to meet me at my house, and he was taking forever. So I got on my bike and rode after him. Halfway there, I see Gary what’s-his-face with two other scrawny kids surrounding Daniel, throwing globs of dirt at him. Daniel’s just standing there, taking it, even though he was bigger than all of them.

So I rush into the circle, pushing one of the kids to the ground and asked Daniel what was going on. He sort of whispered that his mom told him it was bad to fight. I told him there was always a time to fight and this was that time. It was like a light went off. Daniel pushed skinny kid #2 to the ground then punched Gary right in the nose. Gary squealed like a girl and ran off.

That might seem odd to define a “special childhood memory,” but I’m fond of it, because it was the day Daniel stood up for himself and never looked back. Yes, he was still the nice guy, but no one tried to pick on the “big guy” after that.

What draws you to Clara? Do you think she feels the same?

What’s not to draw me? Number one, there’s undeniable chemistry between us. She’s hot, and well, she seems to like what she sees in me. It’s kind of obvious the way she looks at me all the time. Number two, we’re both Guardians. We just fit in every way.

And yes, she definitely feels the same way. No doubt.

Michael your answers to these questions were certainly enlightening! Thanks so much for stopping by and spending time with us!

Resistance Character Quest: Jeremy [day 4]

It's day #4 of the Resistance Character Quest. We hope you're enjoying getting to know these characters! Today we're gonna hear a bit about Jeremey!

Jeremy's Bio: Sounder for Homer’s clan. Jeremy is calm, cool, and confident.  And, yes, he knows it. His favorite hobbies besides listening to his iPod? Annoying Ben and teasing Clara. Something no one really knows about him? He loves playing the piano.

So excited to have you with us today, Jeremy! Welcome! I hope you have a BLAST answering our questions! Let's get down to them....

What do you miss most about life before the Reapers came?

Let’s see, I hated school, so I didn’t miss much there. Except maybe art class. That was cool. I hated my home-life, so not much to miss there. I know my parents weren’t much of parents, but I do hope they made it out okay. (I doubt it though, so I don’t like to think about that.)
I’d say the only thing I really miss is downloading new songs to iTunes and listening to my favorite bands’ new music. I mean, the idea of no new music being created is driving me crazy! Is this it? Will there be nothing else? That’s insane to think about. We’ve gotta do something about that.

If you could have any three people from history over to dinner, who would it be?

Beethoven, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Amy Lee. Dude, that would be so awesome! Napoleon could tell us stories about fighting in battles and all that, Beethoven could compose music for it, and Amy could sing while I play the piano. Cool, right? I mean, I’ve always wanted to know if Napoleon really was as short as they say he was. I think history experts just make up a lot of stuff. History books are probably full of just made-up opinions by some stuck-up professor somewhere along the line.
I’d bet my iPod that Beethoven was probably a Sounder, too. I just really wanna know. And, why Amy Lee? Have you seen the woman? Have you listened to her? She’s got a set of pipes that light me on fire. If Beethoven and Napoleon stand me up, that’s fine by me. Amy and I will just have a candlelight dinner for two.

What is your most embarrassing moment?

Don’t have one. I don’t get embarrassed.

In your Setti clan, who is the most difficult to live with and why?

Melanie is by far the most difficult. She’s gotta have everything in order and in its place. It’s like living with Mary Poppins or something. I mean, who really cares if there are socks on the floor or Ding-Dong wrappers in the car?

What’s a quote that would represent your philosophy on life?

“Now remember, things look bad and it looks like you’re not gonna make it, then you gotta get mean. I mean plumb, mad-dog mean. ‘Cause if you lose your head and you give up then you neither live nor win. That’s just the way it is.” That’s Clint Eastwood in Outlaw Josie Wales, one of the greatest movies ever made. Next to the Star Wars movies, of course
And you can’t forget Obi-Wan Kenobi’s advice: “May the force be with you.” Don’t ever lose the force, dude.

Thanks so much for coming by and chatting with us today, Jeremy. It's been really great learning a bit more about you!

Resistance Character Quest: Ben [Day 2]

Welcome to day #2 of the Resistance Character Quest! We are fortunate to have with us today a really "BRIGHT" guy, his name is Ben.

Ben's Bio: Light-bearer in Homer’s clan. Ben is an all-American boy who sees life through optimistic, glass-half-full lenses. Nothing annoys him. Well, except for Jeremy. Favorite hobbies? Eating!

Now that we know a little bit more about Ben, let's see what he has to say in answer to our most pressing questions, shall we?

Thanks so much for being here with us today, Ben! It's gonna be great having you ENLIGHTEN us about who you are!

What was your favorite subject in high school?

P.E. I love running. I like to watch the girls run, too.

What do you miss most about life before the Reapers came?

Smoothie King, McDonald’s French fries, and Seinfeld reruns. Oh, yeah. And sleeping late on Saturday mornings. And my mom’s chocolate-chip pancakes. . . and my dad’s famous barbeque ribs.

What is your most embarrassing moment?

That would have to be the 9th grade “Back to School” dance at Beau ChĂȘne High School. Gabe and I went and met up with our friends Mark and Zack in the school gym where the dance was.

I got thirsty so I went to get some punch. Mel was there, standing by herself in a yellow dress, I remember. She had started to kind of hang out with us at school, but I didn’t know her that well back then. She looked kind of lonesome, and I wanted to talk to her. I took one of the canned cokes on ice, fumbled with it on the table, then offered it to her.

I’ll never forget I said, “You look like you could use this.” When she opened the tab, coke fizzed and sprayed all over her yellow dress. At first, she was really mad. Her eyebrows scrunched up the way they do now when she gets mad. But after I said I was sorry about a hundred times, she was so nice about it. She’s always really nice about things like that, when I screw up or whatever.

In your Setti clan, who is the most difficult to live with and why?

Dude, are you kidding me? It’s Jeremy! He’s so freakin’ annoying sometimes—always giving me a hard time and stuff. But I know that’s just the way he is. Some people operate like that, because they don’t know how to just be cool, ya know?

When did you realize you were “different”?

Hmm. Am I different? When I realized I was a Setti, Gabe and the rest of my friends realized they were, too. So I wasn’t any different from them. We were sort of all the same, so I never thought I was different. You know what I mean?

Thanks so much for stopping by with us today, Ben.
