Blood Magic - Tessa Gratton

I enjoyed this book, At first I was thrown off by the altering characters, one in the past, and one in the present. It was a little slow to start, but as the both intertwine with one another, Blood Magic becomes an amazing story of loss, power, love, and determination. I'm honestly surprised at some of the bad reviews that I've read about this. Yes, I was hesitant because of them, but i'm so happy I gave it a chance! I was truly enchanted.

Blood Magic starts off by being introduced to Silla. In the small town that she lives in, everyone knows everything about everything. Last July, Silla Kennicott and her brother Reese went through a gruesome tragedy. The Kennicott's have lived next to the cemetery all their life. One day, a strange package is delivered to the door. It's a journal, sent by someone named The Deacon. Silla starts reading the journal and realizes that it was her dads work. Her father had kept this journal and a very dark secret from both her and Reese their whole life. As she's reading, she learns her father was not just a latin teacher... but he was a Magician. Wondering if it's real, she decides to recreate one of the spells. I mean it's simple right?
Draw a circle... place a dead leaf in the center...
sprinkle some salt... recite a little Latin... add a drop of blood...
Ok, maybe it's not THAT simple. Somehow it feels right to Silla. She feels the blood tingle as she draws the it, itching to get out. Since nothing in her life has been remotely right since the horrific deaths of her parents, She’s willing to do anything to uncover the truth about her family. Even if it is a spell, and a spill of blood.

The journal isn’t the only new event in Silla’s life. Enter Nick Pardee, the new guy next door who may have seen Silla casting a spell. Nick sees Silla do the magic in the Cemetery. Worried about looking like a stalker, he introduces himself after she was done. After that first night in the cemetery Nick starts to have horrible nightmares again. Soon enough he realizes they aren't nightmares, but memories. But as they spend more time together, As they spend more and more time together, they realize Nick might not be a stranger to the magic himself. Coming from a "Crazy Witch" mother and all. Silla and Nick can’t deny their attraction. And they can’t ignore the dark presence lurking and waiting to reclaim the journal, all its power, and more.
